No proof man knew ‘credit profile number’ was really another’s SSN

A state appeals panel last week found that Cook County prosecutors failed to prove a man convicted of identity theft knew he was using another person’s information.State law defines identity theft as a crime that is committed “knowingly.” Defendant Michael Fort was arrested and charged with identity theft and forgery when he put down another person’s Social Security number on a vehicle lease application in February 2016.
